David T. Curiel, MD, PhD, is a tenured Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine, with secondary appointments in Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology. He directs the Biologic Therapeutics Center and leads research in virus-based therapeutics, particularly adenoviral vectors for gene therapy and virotherapy. His work focuses on translating laboratory innovations into human clinical trials for cancer, genetic disorders, and infectious diseases, including FDA fast-track therapies for glioblastoma.
- BA, Chemistry: West Georgia College (1978)
- MD: Emory University School of Medicine (1982)
- PhD, Virology: University of Groningen, Netherlands (2002)
His research centers on gene therapy, virology, and translational medicine, with key contributions to adenoviral vector engineering for targeted gene delivery. Recent work includes mucosal vaccines for SARS-CoV-2 variants and gut-directed therapies for inflammatory bowel disease. Articles highlight his expertise in oncolytic virotherapy, genome editing, and somatic cell engineering.
Dr. Curiel is a funded member of the NIH Common Fund’s Somatic Cell Genome Editing (SCGE) program and serves as Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Ovarian Research. His lab develops surrogate endpoint analyses (e.g., imaging) to optimize clinical trial insights. Collaborations span immunology, oncology, and infectious disease research.
