David Stephenson is a Professor in the Statistical Analysis of Weather and Climate at the University of Exeter, where he is also Director and founder of the Exeter Climate Systems research centre. He holds an adjunct professorship at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, University of Bergen. His academic journey includes roles as a Reader in Statistical Climatology (University of Reading), Lecturer, and various research fellowships across institutions in France, Norway, and the U.S. He has a PhD in theoretical particle physics from the University of Edinburgh and a BA in Physics from the University of Oxford (Oriel College Scholar).
His research focuses on statistical methodologies for understanding climate variations and improving weather/climate forecasts, with expertise in climate extremes, forecast verification, and time series analysis. He collaborates internationally, contributing to organizations like the World Meteorological Organisation and leading editorial roles in journals such as Journal of Climate.
Recognition includes the Seymour Cray Prize (1995), AGU Refereeing Excellence (1997), and fellowships from the Royal Meteorological and Statistical Societies. He advises global climate initiatives and chairs key expert groups on forecast verification and climate indices.
