David Stark is the Arthur Lehman Professor of Sociology at Columbia University and Director of Columbia's Center on Organizational Innovation. His research focuses on organizational innovation, valuation processes, and the intersection of diversity with cognitive networks in markets and teams. He currently leads a major ERC-funded project exploring 'Diversity and Performance: Networks of Cognition in Markets and Teams.'
Stark’s work integrates ethnographic methods with sociological theory, as seen in his seminal book *The Sense of Dissonance: Accounts of Worth in Economic Life* (2011) and co-edited volumes like *Moments of Valuation: Exploring Sites of Dissonance* (2015). His recent research examines algorithmic management in platform economies, attention inequality in DEI initiatives, and the sociological dimensions of AI governance.
Key awards include a five-year Advanced Career Award from the European Research Council. He frequently publishes in top journals and collaborates globally, including co-editing special issues on platform capitalism and the war in Ukraine for *Sociologica*. Stark is also a sought-after speaker at events like the Falling Walls Science Summit.
His academic contributions span organizational sociology, economic sociology, and digital sociology. Current projects address algorithmic control, racial equity, and the cognitive dynamics of valuation in competitive environments.
