David Smithrud

David Smithrud is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati. His research focuses on mimetic chemistry, exploring molecular recognition mechanisms in proteins and developing synthetic agents for drug delivery and cancer therapy. He holds a BS from the University of Washington, a PhD from UCLA (1992), and completed postdoctoral work at Penn State University with Prof. Benkovic. His work integrates organic synthesis, supramolecular chemistry, and biomedical applications.

• Postdoctoral studies under Prof. Diederich (host-guest chemistry) and Prof. Benkovic (catalytic antibodies)

Research Interests: Host-guest chemistry, rotaxane design, molecular recognition, cell transport agents, DNA binding agents, and anticancer drug development. His group creates synthetic molecules that mimic protein binding domains, with applications in targeted drug delivery and cancer therapy.
