David Schoenbrun is a Professor Emeritus and Professor of History at Northwestern University's Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences. He specializes in African history, particularly pre-1900 periods, with a focus on East Africa. His work integrates historical linguistics, archaeology, and environmental studies to explore early African societies. Schoenbrun holds a Ph.D. from UCLA (1990) and has authored influential books like The Names of the Python and A Green Place, A Good Place, which have received major academic awards.
His research interests span African history, science/technology studies, environmental history, and gender studies. He has supervised numerous doctoral students and contributed to interdisciplinary projects, including films on African cultural heritage. Schoenbrun’s teaching emphasizes primary sources and critical historiography, covering topics like violence, environment, and precolonial African societies.
