Dr. David Saunders is an Associate Professor and Head of Psychology and Sociology at the University of Northampton's Centre for Psychological and Sociological Sciences. His research focuses on psychology, parapsychology, and mental health interventions, particularly in educational settings and adolescent populations. He leads the DISCOVER implementation study, a project investigating school-based mental wellbeing interventions for 16-18-year-olds across England. His work bridges clinical psychology, educational programs, and parapsychological phenomena such as lucid dreaming and sensory isolation effects in flotation tanks.
Research interests include the psychological correlates of lucid dreaming, cost-effectiveness of mental health interventions, and the application of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in schools. He supervises students exploring topics like peer relations in children, mental health practitioners in education, and anomalous experiences during the pandemic. Saunders collaborates widely, co-authoring studies on cluster randomized trials and school-based mental health programs.
His recent work emphasizes evidence-based approaches to adolescent mental health, with publications in The Lancet Psychiatry and Trials. He also engages with parapsychological research, exploring sensory isolation and psi phenomena. Media engagements include discussions on sleep patterns and mental health interventions. Saunders is actively involved in preserving historical psychological archives and promoting public understanding of his research through media contributions.
Academic activities include conference presentations on topics like teacher-student interactions and archival preservation. He accepts PhD students and is available for media commentary on his research areas.
