David P. Williamson is a Professor in the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering at Cornell University, holding this position since 2004. Prior to Cornell, he served as Senior Manager of the Computer Science Principles and Methodologies group at IBM's Almaden Research Center (2000-2003) and as a Research Staff Member at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center. He completed his PhD in Computer Science at MIT in 1993 under Michel X. Goemans and conducted postdoctoral research at Cornell with Éva Tardos.
His research centers on designing efficient approximation algorithms for NP-hard discrete optimization problems. Key application areas include network design (developing cost-effective communication infrastructures), facility location (determining optimal placement of service centers), and scheduling (optimizing resource allocation over time). This work bridges theoretical computer science and operations research, contributing to algorithmic foundations in combinatorial optimization.
Professor Williamson maintains active scholarly engagement through program participation at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing, including the \"Bridging Continuous and Discrete Optimization\" program (Fall 2017) and \"Real-Time Decision Making\" program (Spring 2018) as a Visiting Scientist.
