Dr. David O'Neill is a Lecturer in the Department of Science at South East Technological University (SETU). His research focuses on molecular biology, environmental science, and biodiversity assessment through DNA-based methodologies. He is affiliated with the Eco Innovation Research Centre and actively collaborates on projects involving environmental DNA (eDNA) and species identification.
Teaching responsibilities include Introductory Biology, Cell Biology & Biochemistry, Food Microbiology, and advanced modules in Biopharmaceutical Science and Bioinformatics at undergraduate levels. His courses emphasize laboratory practices and research methodologies essential for modern biological sciences.
Research interests include mosquito taxonomy, bat faecal metabarcoding, primer bias in molecular diet analysis, and ecological applications of DNA barcoding. Recent work has explored Ireland's insect biodiversity using novel eDNA sources and addressed challenges in vector species identification.
No scientific awards are explicitly listed in the profile. His research output includes peer-reviewed articles in journals like Biodiversity and Conservation and Mammalian Biology, with a focus on entomology and conservation biology.
