O'Mahony's research explores justice conceptualization within criminal systems, emphasizing individual rights and restorative alternatives. His work examines victim, community, and offender needs through empirical methodologies, developing critical theories of restorative justice. Key research areas include:
- Restorative justice integration within criminal systems
- Transitional justice mechanisms in post-conflict societies
- Youth justice reform and policy implementation
- Criminalization of squatting from restorative perspectives
- Victim-offender reconciliation frameworks
His publication portfolio demonstrates consistent focus on restorative justice evolution across three decades, with recent work examining institutional abuse contexts. Early scholarship established foundations in youth justice systems, while contemporary research addresses clerical sexual abuse and restorative accountability. Longitudinal themes include Northern Ireland's post-conflict justice reforms and comparative analyses of European juvenile systems.
O'Mahony has secured over £1.3 million in research funding, enabling impactful studies including the national evaluation of England and Wales' youth justice system for the Home Office. His fundamental review of Northern Ireland's juvenile justice system informed the Justice (NI) Act 2002, establishing Europe's first mainstreamed restorative youth conferencing system. Current PhD supervision includes projects on police accountability frameworks.
