Dr. David Newell is an Associate Professor in the School of Environmental Science & Engineering at Southern Cross University (SCU), within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He holds a PhD from SCU and specializes in amphibian conservation, ecoacoustics, and climate change impacts on biodiversity. His research focuses on montane rainforest frogs, amphibian disease ecology (particularly chytridiomycosis), and biodiversity corridor effectiveness.
Education:
- BSc, Southern Cross University
- PhD, Southern Cross University
Research Interests:
- Climate change impacts on amphibians
- Ecoacoustic monitoring of threatened fauna
- Host-pathogen interactions in amphibians
- Ecological recovery post-wildfires
Recent Trends in Articles: Recent publications highlight amphibian immune responses to chytrid fungus, post-fire biodiversity recovery, and the role of climate extremes in disease dynamics. He also explores conservation strategies for species affected by invasive pathogens and habitat fragmentation.
Awards:
- 2023 Southern Cross University Research Award
Advising & Grants: Supervises postgraduate students on threatened forest fauna. Research has been supported by grants addressing amphibian disease management, climate resilience, and biodiversity corridor effectiveness.
Labs & Teams: Affiliated with SCU's Environmental Analysis Laboratory and collaborates on projects with national parks and conservation agencies.
