David Lutz is an Assistant Professor at Colby-Sawyer College's School of Arts & Sciences since 2023. Previously, he served as a Research Assistant Professor at Dartmouth College. He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Environmental Sciences from the University of Virginia and a B.S. in Biology from Wake Forest University.
His research focuses on remote sensing of the environment, forest ecology, and ecosystem services, with field applications in tropical, temperate, and boreal forests. He employs satellite imagery, wireless sensor networks, and machine learning to study environmental change.
Dr. Lutz has published over 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts in journals including Nature, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Environmental Research Letters. His work has been funded by NASA, the U.S. Forest Service, and the National Science Foundation. He has served as a peer reviewer for 20+ journals and presented at international conferences.
He teaches environmental science, GIS and remote sensing, and environmental chemistry courses. His interdisciplinary approach combines ecological modeling, climate policy, and freshwater ecosystem analysis.
