David Lewis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of South Florida (USF), part of the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on ecosystem ecology and biogeochemistry, particularly the interactions of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles with land use, hydrology, and ecological communities. He leads the Ecosystems Lab, which studies wetlands, urban ecosystems, and intertidal habitats, emphasizing human-environment interactions.
Education: PhD in Limnology and Marine Science (University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2000), MS in Oceanography (1996), and BA in Biology (University of Kansas, 1994).
Research Interests: Biogeochemical cycling in soil and water, effects of land management and urbanization on ecosystems, wetland and mangrove dynamics, and climate change impacts. His work integrates field studies, lab analyses, and interdisciplinary collaborations with social scientists and environmental managers.
Key Contributions: Over 95 publications, including studies on microbial mat biogeochemistry, nitrogen retention in forests, and socioecological systems.
