David L. Jaffe is a Class Lecturer and Student Project Coach in Mechanical Engineering (Design Group) at Stanford University. His research focuses on developing innovative assistive technologies and rehabilitation systems, particularly microcomputer-based solutions for mobility impairments.
Jaffe has led significant projects including the Ultrasonic Head Controlled Wheelchair interface, driving simulators for cognitive rehabilitation after neurological injuries, and pressure/motion feedback systems for preventing skin breakdown in elderly and disabled populations. His work emphasizes practical technology transfer from academic research to commercial healthcare applications.
He has contributed to bringing multiple rehabilitation products to market including Lingraphica (aphasia communication device), HandBike mobility system, and VA Seat Interface Orthosis. His current investigations include driving assessment protocols using advanced simulators and wearable balance monitoring systems.
