David L. Gorchov is a Professor and Chair of the Natural Areas Committee at Miami University's Department of Biology, with affiliation to the Institute for the Environment and Sustainability. He teaches courses including Field Botany, Principles of Environmental Science, and Field Ecology.
Research focuses on plant population ecology, community ecology, and plant-herbivore interactions, with particular emphasis on forest invasions by exotic plant species. Current projects investigate interactions between invasive woody plants and white-tailed deer, their impacts on native plants, and tree regeneration. Research examines factors influencing invasion processes including biotic resistance from deer herbivory and propagule pressure. Field studies are conducted in Ohio woodlands, building on previous work in Maryland, Mexico, and Peru.
Awards and Recognition:
- 2025 Distinction Award from the Institute for the Environment and Sustainability
- Outstanding Paper of 2024 in Invasive Plant Science and Management
- Greenacres Foundation research grant for forest understory restoration studies
Student Advising: Actively mentors graduate students in Biology, Botany, and Environmental Science programs. Recent student research includes deer population dynamics, invasive plant management, forest restoration techniques, and long-term ecological impacts of invasive species. Gorchov's lab utilizes trail camera monitoring, experimental exclosure studies, and vegetation surveys in natural areas.
