David Kyle is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Davis. His research focuses on social innovations, entrepreneurship, and creativity within global contexts such as coffee cultures, jazz improvisation, and human mobility. He explores topics like migrant smuggling, transnational migration, and the intersection of capitalism with human rights. Kyle has conducted fieldwork across four continents, including studies on coffee growers in Mexico, Central America, and Ecuador, and coffee shop cultures in Northern California, Seattle, and New York City. Currently, he is writing a book on the history of the 'science of creativity.' His teaching includes the course 'World in a Cup: The Sociology of Global Coffee Cultures.' His work has been featured in radio and television interviews, and he offers lectures on Coffee and Creativity.
Research interests span migration industries, transnational networks, and the unintended consequences of migration policies. Kyle’s studies often emphasize grassroots creativity among marginalized groups, such as minority communities in coffee production and diasporic entrepreneurs. His publications analyze migration markets, state policies, and the dynamics of illicit migration, offering critical insights into global mobility and its socio-political dimensions.
His articles explore themes like human smuggling, refugee integration, and the impact of foreign investment on democratic reforms. Kyle’s interdisciplinary approach combines ethnographic methods with historical and comparative analyses, addressing both theoretical and applied questions in migration studies and cultural sociology.
