معرفی
David Keith Alan Barnes is a Data Interpretation Ecologist and Marine Ecologist at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), where he has worked since 2002, with additional roles as a visiting lecturer at Cambridge University. His career spans Antarctic research since 1990, including wintering on Signy Island and lecturing at University College Cork (1997-2001).
Dr. Barnes specializes in marine ecology with particular focus on Antarctic and Arctic benthic communities, blue carbon dynamics, climate change impacts, and microplastics pollution. His research integrates field observations with data interpretation to assess biodiversity changes across polar regions, examining how glacial retreat, iceberg scouring, and warming temperatures affect ecosystem structure and carbon sequestration capacity. Recent work demonstrates how Antarctic seabed communities can provide negative feedbacks on climate change through blue carbon storage.
His extensive publication record (over 100 papers since 2009) reveals consistent leadership in polar marine ecology, with recent articles (2022-2025) emphasizing climate-driven ecosystem shifts, blue carbon quantification across polar gradients, and microplastic contamination in remote Antarctic fjords. Barnes frequently collaborates with international researchers across the Southern Ocean and Arctic regions, contributing to major assessments including IPBES-IPCC workshops.
Among his notable contributions are demonstrating how Antarctic benthic communities increase carbon storage following ice retreat, revealing the vulnerability of shallow communities to increased iceberg scouring, and documenting spatial competition changes under warming conditions. His work bridges fundamental ecology with climate policy applications, particularly regarding ocean-based climate solutions.
Dr. Barnes actively contributes to environmental management through biodiversity surveys supporting Antarctic infrastructure projects and develops methodologies for monitoring polar ecosystem changes. His research directly informs conservation strategies for vulnerable marine ecosystems across the rapidly changing polar regions.
