Dr. David Jeffery is the Gilde-Grose Distinguished Professor of Science at Marietta College, appointed in 2003. He holds a BS in Geology from Marietta College (1989), an MS in Geology from Bowling Green State University, and a Ph.D. in Geology (stratigraphy, paleontology, and paleoecology) from Texas A&M University. His academic roles include teaching courses such as Invertebrate Paleontology, Historical Geology, and National Parks. He is affiliated with the Department of Petroleum Engineering and Geology.
Dr. Jeffery’s research focuses on Mississippian carbonates, Silurian reefs, sandstone diagenesis, and fossil algae. His work includes collaborative projects with students, such as the Marietta College dinosaur dig in Utah and current investigations into Silurian reefs in Virginia caves. His career includes prior roles as a petroleum geologist at ARCO and BP Amoco, where he explored oil and gas basins in the Rocky Mountains and Southwest.
He has published papers on paleontology and stratigraphy, blending fieldwork with academic research. His engagement in national parks as a ranger and researcher highlights his commitment to geological education and public outreach.
