David J. Hemmer

David J. Hemmer is a full Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Michigan Technological University, specializing in representation theory and algebraic combinatorics.

Research Focus:

• Modular representation theory of symmetric and algebraic groups
• Algebraic combinatorics, especially generating functions and partition identities
• Character tables and extensions between simple modules

His recent work explores deep connections between the representation theory of symmetric groups and intricate combinatorial structures such as the Mullineux map, palindrome partitions, and hook-length statistics.

Teaching & Outreach:
In Spring 2025 he teaches MA 3203 (Introduction to Cryptography) and MA 4208 (Optimization and Graph Algorithms). Beyond the classroom, Hemmer directs the Copper Country Math Circle, an outreach program engaging local K-12 students in interactive mathematical explorations.
