David J. Gunkel is a Professor in the Department of Communication at Northern Illinois University (USA) and an associate professor of applied ethics at Łazarski University in Warsaw, Poland. He holds the prestigious Presidential Research, Scholarship, and Artistry Professorship. His work focuses on the ethical and legal challenges of artificial intelligence and robotics, including robot rights, AI ethics, and human-machine communication (HMC). He has been recognized with NIU's Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award and the Presidential Teaching Professorship for his innovative curriculum design.
He earned his PhD from DePaul University, specializing in the philosophy of technology. His research explores societal impacts of emerging technologies, with a focus on critical ethical frameworks for AI and robotics. He has authored nine books, including Robot Rights and An Introduction to Communication and AI, and frequently publishes in journals like AI & Society and Journal of Media Ethics.
In teaching, he develops courses on web design, computer-mediated communication, AI/robotics, and communication technology. His pedagogical approach emphasizes critical thinking and ethical preparedness for a technologically mediated world.
