معرفی
David J. Gross is the Frederick Gluck Professor of Theoretical Physics and Director of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). A Nobel laureate in Physics (2004), he is renowned for co-discovering asymptotic freedom, a cornerstone of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), and for foundational contributions to string theory and unified field theories. His work has profoundly influenced particle physics and efforts to reconcile quantum mechanics with gravity.
Gross earned his Ph.D. in 1966 from UC Berkeley and previously held the Thomas Jones Professorship in Mathematical Physics at Princeton University. His research explores theoretical physics, focusing on unification principles, quantum field theories, and string theory. He has delivered prestigious lectures, including the 12th Einstein Lecture Dahlem (2012), where he discussed Einstein’s pursuit of unification and modern advancements.
Among his accolades are the Nobel Prize (shared with Frank Wilczek and David Politzer), the Dirac Medal, and honorary degrees from institutions worldwide. He is a member of prestigious academies, including the US National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society.
Gross advises students, notably Frank Wilczek, and leads the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, fostering collaborations in theoretical physics. His work bridges foundational questions in particle physics with broader unification goals, reflecting Einstein’s legacy while advancing modern theoretical frameworks.
