David Hughes

David Hughes is an Associate Research Fellow at the School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics, University of Wollongong, affiliated with the National Institute for Applied Statistics Research Australia (NIASRA) and the Mixed Models and Experimental Design Lab. His role focuses on applying statistical methodologies to agricultural and bioscience research to enhance cost efficiency and research outcomes. He holds a Bachelor of Medical Mathematics (Dean's Scholar) and an Honours degree in Medical Mathematics from the University of Wollongong, supported by a GRDC-funded Undergraduate Honours Scholarship.

His research integrates statistical modelling with agricultural challenges, emphasizing genotype-by-environment interactions, crop quality analysis, and experimental design. Collaborations with farmers and breeders across Australia aim to translate statistical insights into practical agricultural solutions. His recent work includes studies on wheat falling number performance and chickpea resistance to Phytophthora root rot, reflecting his commitment to high-impact, application-driven research.

David actively participates in academic events such as the ANZSC2021 conference and NIASRA workshops, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. His training programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels underscore his dedication to advancing statistical education in agriculture and biosciences.
