David M. Houston is an Assistant Professor of Education in the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University. He serves as the academic program coordinator for the Education Policy program and director of EdPolicy Forward: The Center for Education Policy. Additionally, he is an affiliate faculty member at the Schar School of Policy and Government. His research focuses on education politics, governance, and public opinion, with publications in prestigious journals like the American Educational Research Journal and Harvard Educational Review. His work has been supported by major foundations such as the Fordham Institute, Hewlett Foundation, and Spencer Foundation.
Prof. Houston holds a PhD in Politics and Education from Columbia University, where he studied in both Teachers College and the Department of Political Science. Before academia, he taught in New York City public schools. His research examines partisan polarization in education policy, public opinion dynamics, and governance structures. He teaches courses on education reform, policy processes, and the intersection of education with political advocacy.
His recent articles analyze the effects of partisan engagement on education politics, pandemic-era school policies, and shifts in parental attitudes. He actively contributes to policy debates through media outlets like Education Week and Vox, bridging academic research with public discourse.
