Dr David Hemsoll is a Professor of Architectural History and Theory at the University of Birmingham, affiliated with the Department of Art History, Curating and Visual Studies. He serves as editor of the peer-reviewed journal Architectural History and has held roles such as departmental head (2002–2010). His expertise spans Renaissance art and architecture, particularly in Rome, Florence, and Venice, alongside architectural theory and design methodology.
Dr Hemsoll holds degrees from the University of London (BSc, MA), the University of East Anglia (BA), and the University of Birmingham (PhD), and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA). His research explores Renaissance architects like Palladio and Michelangelo, focusing on their engagement with classical antiquity and design principles. He has co-authored major works, including a monograph on Michele Sanmicheli and a catalog of Cassiano dal Pozzo’s architectural drawings.
His publications analyze architectural proportion, Palladio’s influences, and Michelangelo’s designs, emphasizing methodologies of architectural emulation. Recent works include Emulating Antiquity (2019) and articles on Palladio’s proportional systems (2025). He supervises PhD/MPhil students in Renaissance art, architecture, and architectural theory.
Affiliated with the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, Hemsoll contributes to both academic discourse and institutional collections. His research bridges historical analysis with theoretical frameworks, influencing contemporary understanding of Renaissance architectural practices.
