Professor David Guest is a distinguished academic and researcher in plant pathology and horticulture at the University of Sydney's Sydney Institute of Agriculture. He holds a BScAgr (1977) and PhD (1983) from the Faculty of Agriculture. His career spans over four decades, including 20 years at the University of Melbourne before returning to Sydney in 2004. He currently serves as Professor of Plant Pathology and Chair in Horticulture.
Guest's research focuses on managing plant diseases in tropical horticulture, particularly Phytophthora diseases in cocoa, oil palm, and jackfruit. He collaborates internationally with institutions in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Colombia to improve smallholder livelihoods through sustainable crop practices. Locally, he addresses dieback diseases in native forests and horticultural industries.
He has supervised over 40 postgraduate students, published >100 articles, and secured $17M+ in research funding. Awards include the Order of Australia and Vietnam's Career Medal. His teaching spans plant pathology, microbiology, and agronomy at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Awards: Fellow of the Australasian Plant Pathology Society, Past-President of the Asian Association of Societies for Plant Pathology, and recipient of the Government of Vietnam's Career Medal. Current projects include cocoa value chain development in Bougainville and disease management strategies in Indonesia.
