David Grondin is an Associate Professor in the School of Political Studies at the University of Ottawa, specializing in global politics, International Relations, American studies, and critical security/military/war studies. His research focuses on the intersection of culture, technology, and power in the context of the US national security state and the digital age's transformation of warfare and governance.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Political Science (International Relations and American Studies), Université du Québec à Montréal (2008)
- M.A. in International Relations, University of Toronto (2001)
- B.A. in American History, Université du Québec à Montréal (2000)
Research Interests: Algorithmic governance, surveillance of mobilities, US technowar and militainment complex, media representations of national security, and the sociology of knowledge in security studies. Current projects include collaborations on drone technologies, data infrastructures, and the cinematic portrayal of the national security state.
Teaching:
- Course examples: POL 7502 (War, Popular Culture, and Geopolitics), POL 7512 (Security and Conflicts: Contemporary Issues), and POL 8411 (US Foreign Policy).
Collaborations: Works with researchers like Nisha Shah (drones and secrecy), Anthony Amicelle, Karine Côté-Boucher, and others on mobility governance and security. Co-authored Movies, Myth, and the National Security State (2016) and edited a special issue in Geopolitics (2011).
Labs/Teams: Part of interdisciplinary teams studying migration governance, security technologies, and the militarization of media.
