Dr. David Graus is an Assistant Professor in Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) at the University of Amsterdam. He leads the Artificial Intelligence for Open Government (AI for OpenGov) ICAI Lab, a collaboration between the University of Amsterdam and the Rijksorganisatie voor Informatiehuishouding (RvIHH).
His primary research affiliation is with the Natural Language Processing & Digital Humanities group at the ILLC. Dr. Graus specializes in applying Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing techniques to improve the accessibility and usability of open government data. His work focuses on developing AI solutions for government transparency, including the Woogle search engine for open government information.
After eight years in industry, he returned to academia to focus on this societally relevant research area with real-world impact. Dr. Graus supervises three PhD students who work within a "Living Lab" environment with real data and users. He is actively engaged in public discourse about AI and open government, having given workshops and masterclasses on these topics.
Dr. Graus serves on the board of SETUP and is a member of the Commissie Persoonsgegevens Amsterdam (CPA), which advises the Amsterdam city council on matters concerning personal data, algorithms, and digital rights. As a public engagement fellow at Amsterdam AI's "De AI Samenleving," he engages in dialogues with citizens at venues like NEMO, OBA libraries, and city service centers in Amsterdam.
