David Garcia is a Professor for Social and Behavioral Data Science at the University of Konstanz, leading the Social Data Science Lab within the Center for Data and Methods. He also holds Associate Faculty status at the Complexity Science Hub Vienna and is a Privatdozent at ETH Zurich. His research integrates Computer Science, Complexity Science, and Social Sciences to address societal challenges like misinformation, democratic decline, and privacy risks. He explores AI's societal impacts, including emergent behaviors in AI agents and ideological expressions in LLMs. Garcia earned his PhD and Habilitation from ETH Zurich, previously serving as a professor at Graz University of Technology before joining Konstanz in 2022. He actively contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives such as the Cluster of Excellence “Politics of Inequality” and the Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behavior.
Key educational milestones include his Computer Science studies and doctoral work at ETH Zurich (2012 PhD, 2018 Habilitation). His career includes founding the first lab at the Complexity Science Hub Vienna, supported by the Vienna Science and Technology Fund. Garcia’s work emphasizes ethical AI development, computational methods for social analysis, and bridging disciplinary gaps through data-driven approaches. His recent studies focus on NLP quantification of populism in U.S. Congress and AI’s role in polarization.
