Professor David Faflik is a scholar of 19th-century American literature and culture at the University of Rhode Island, specializing in urban studies, global American Studies, and the history of the book. He holds the rank of Professor in the Department of English, College of Arts and Sciences. His research interrogates cultural formations through interdisciplinary approaches, blending literary analysis with sociolinguistics and archival history.
Education: Ph.D. (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill), M.A. (same institution), B.A. (University of Texas, Austin). Current projects include studies on Brazilian soccer culture (Fulbright Distinguished Chair, 2022) and the role of literary gifts in early America.
Research interests span urban formalism, transcendentalism’s impact on modern unbelief, and the intersection of sport with cultural identity. His work Urban Formalism (2020) reimagines interpretive strategies for urban experiences, while Melville and the Question of Meaning (2018) explores semiotics in 19th-century literature.
Recent publications (2020–2024) emphasize interdisciplinary methods, blending political philosophy, film studies, and material culture. Upcoming works address global American studies through Brazilian soccer and early American manuscript circulation.
Teaching focuses on American literary history, short stories, and the history of the book. Courses include English 410 (History of the Book in Early America) and graduate seminars on 19th-century texts.
