David E. Pritchard

David E. Pritchard is the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), affiliated with the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE). He joined MIT's Department of Physics faculty in 1970 and is a leading figure in atomic physics and quantum technologies.

Education:

• B.S. from California Institute of Technology
• Ph.D. from Harvard University (working under Daniel Kleppner)

Research Interests:
Professor Pritchard pioneered atom optics, demonstrating atomic diffraction by light gratings, and contributed foundational work in laser cooling, including the magneto-optical trap. His research spans Bose-Einstein condensation, atom interferometry, and applications in nanotechnology/quantum computing. Collaborations include merging Bose-Einstein condensation with atom optics alongside Wolfgang Ketterle.

Teaching & Innovation:
