David Do Paço holds the István Deák Visiting Professorship at Columbia University, focusing on 18th-century Habsburg Empire history. His research integrates urban history, diaspora studies, and historical anthropology. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (2012) and has held fellowships at EUI and CEU-IAS. His first monograph, L’Orient à Vienne au dix-huitième siècle (2015), explores Viennese-Oriental intersections. At Sciences Po, he developed the project on Trieste as a trans-imperial city. Currently, he studies Muslim communities in Habsburg cities like Belgrade and Vienna.
He co-directs the Franco-German project Trieste: City of Empire(s) and the Brepols series Histories in Motion. Upcoming roles include a spring term at New Europe College (Bucharest). His recent publications appear in The Historical Journal and Urban History, with contributions to the Cambridge History of the Habsburg Monarchy and the Oxford Handbook of Cultural History of Modern Global Diplomacy.
Research interests emphasize urban governance, minority integration, and imperial administrative systems in multiethnic contexts. His work bridges micro-historical analysis with broader geopolitical frameworks, examining how cities mediated cultural and political tensions within the Habsburg Empire.
