David Bromwich is the Sterling Professor of English at Yale University, where he has taught since 1988. A leading scholar of literature and political thought, his work focuses on moral imagination, intellectual history, and the intersection of politics and ethics. He has authored influential books on figures like Edmund Burke, Abraham Lincoln, and Mohandas Gandhi, as well as essays critiquing contemporary political discourse. Bromwich's research spans 18th- to 21st-century literature, with a particular emphasis on moral philosophy and the role of language in power structures.
His recent talks include discussions on Lincoln’s realism, rhetorical persuasion, and identity politics. He is currently completing an intellectual biography of Edmund Burke. Recognitions include PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award shortlisting and Times Higher Education’s Book of the Year (2014).
