David Brackett is Professor and Canada Research Chair in Popular Music Studies at McGill University. His research examines music categorization, genre evolution, and sociocultural analysis of popular music. Award-winning publications include Categorizing Sound: Genre and Twentieth-Century Popular Music.
He teaches courses on popular music, jazz history, and music analysis. Current projects include collaborative research on sound recording practices and a book analyzing the musical significance of 1966.
