Dr David Bicknell is a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London’s School of Security Studies, Department of War Studies. He holds a PhD in War Studies (2021), an MA in War Studies (2016), and a B.Sc. (Econ) in International Relations from the London School of Economics. Prior to academia, he was a partner specializing in international finance at a London law firm (1992-2015). His research focuses on international law, war crimes, legal history, and the character of war. He teaches modules on international law, human rights, and conflict studies at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
His research explores the legal basis for lethal force in internal conflicts, as detailed in his thesis A penumbra of war: The use of lethal force in British military operations in internal armed conflicts. He contributes to the War Crimes Research Group, examining war crimes and strategic legal frameworks. His publications include analyses of modern warfare, ICC prosecution challenges, and critiques of international law in conflict zones.
Bicknell has organized events such as Norms in Turmoil: Democratic Governance in Peril (June 2021), addressing societal legitimacy in crises. His work bridges legal practice, historical analysis, and contemporary conflict studies.
