Prof. David Ben-Shlomo is an active Associate Professor of Archaeology at Ariel University, specializing in Biblical Archaeology with a focus on Hebron and the Jordan Valley regions. He earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in archaeology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and serves as Co-Director of both the Tel Hebron and Jordan Valley Excavation Projects.
His research interests center on the Second Temple Period, particularly examining Jewish settlement patterns and ritual practices in ancient Hebron. His work has revealed significant archaeological evidence including large ritual baths (mikvaot) from the Second Temple period, indicating the Jewish character of Hebron during this era despite Idumean occupation.
Ben-Shlomo's scholarly contributions focus on the archaeological investigation of ancient Hebron, with particular attention to its fortifications across multiple historical periods including the Early Bronze, Middle Bronze, and Iron Ages. His fieldwork has provided important insights into the continuity of Jewish presence in this biblically significant city.
His academic work bridges archaeological evidence with biblical narratives, particularly regarding Hebron's role as a prominent city in the Judean highlands. His publications demonstrate expertise in both field archaeology and the interpretation of material culture within its historical and religious context.
As an active researcher, Ben-Shlomo continues to contribute to our understanding of ancient Israelite settlement patterns, ritual practices, and urban development through ongoing excavation projects and scholarly publications that connect archaeological findings with historical and biblical contexts.
