معرفی
David Bechtold is a Professor of Physiology in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Gastroenterology at the University of Manchester's School of Medical Sciences. His research focuses on the intersection of circadian biology and metabolic regulation, with particular emphasis on how the body's internal clock influences energy balance, feeding behavior, and metabolic disease.
His research interests include:
- Neurological and endocrine systems governing energy balance (food intake, metabolism, body weight and composition)
- Circadian clock mechanisms that strengthen homeostatic controls
- How clock disruption contributes to metabolic diseases like obesity and diabetes
- Molecular clock components as critical modifiers of food intake and diet preference
Dr. Bechtold's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on circadian regulation across multiple physiological systems. His work spans from molecular biology to whole animal physiology, with particular emphasis on how circadian rhythms influence metabolic processes, immune function, and inflammatory responses. His research employs innovative models including novel transgenics, comprehensive physiological monitoring, and in vivo imaging to explore circadian and metabolic function.
As an educator, Dr. Bechtold teaches courses including 'Clocks, Sleep, and the rhythms of life' (BIOL31681) and 'Hormones and Behaviour' (BIOL31721), for which he serves as Unit Coordinator. He also supervises neuroscience tutorials, dissertation projects, and research projects at both undergraduate and master's levels.
His research is supported by multiple active projects, including 'Neural circuitry determining nocturnal and diurnal physiology and behaviour' (2023-2026), and he is a Principal Investigator for the Centre for Biological Timing. Dr. Bechtold has supervised 9 research students and has published 78 research outputs spanning his career.
