Dr. David Beams is an Associate Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at Tyler, where he was a founding faculty member of the College of Engineering in 1997. He transitioned to academia after decades of industry experience in agricultural electronics and medical imaging (X-ray bone densitometry). His teaching philosophy emphasizes hands-on learning through custom laboratory equipment and historical device collections. His research focused on power electronics and wireless power transfer, alongside contributions to engineering education research through ASEE.
- Educations:
- BSEE (High Honors), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1974
- MSEE, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1977
- PhD, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1997
- Professional History:
- Assistant Professor (1997-2003)
- Associate Professor (2003-2018)
- Named Associate Professor Emeritus, 2019
Dr. Beams pioneered immersive educational methods by curating a historical electronics collection (spanning vacuum tubes to Pentium processors) to contextualize technological evolution. He actively mentored students through the Senior Design capstone program and MS thesis committees. His doctoral research (1992-1997), supported by Ohmeda, involved numerical modeling of anesthesia delivery systems.
As a founding faculty member, he emphasized practical engineering training and lifelong learning opportunities for students. His work in engineering education research highlights a commitment to pedagogical innovation.
