David Balcarras is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Lethbridge (2024–present). Previously, he served as Instructor and Digital Learning Fellow in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT, where he earned his PhD in Philosophy in 2020.

Research Interests:
Dr. Balcarras specializes in philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, philosophy of linguistics, and philosophy of cognitive science. His work also extends into metaphysics, philosophy of science, history of analytic philosophy, social philosophy, and philosophical logic.
Publications & Research Themes:
Since 2020, Balcarras has published foundational papers interrogating the nature of linguistic meaning, the cognitive status of grammar, and the conditions for possessing a language. His 2023 articles in Mind & Language, Pacific Philosophical Quarterly, and Philosophical Perspectives collectively challenge and refine contemporary views on whether meaning is cognized, what it is to have a language, and the limits of functionalist accounts of tacit grammatical knowledge.
