معرفی
David Attwell is Jodrell Professor of Physiology at University College London (UCL), holding this position since 1995. He previously served as Professor (1991), Reader (1988), and Lecturer (1981–1988) in UCL's Department of Physiology. His academic journey includes Royal Society fellowships and postdoctoral roles at Berkeley and Oxford. Attwell's research focuses on neuron-glial interactions, cerebral energy use, and ischaemia mechanisms, with significant contributions to understanding neurovascular coupling and glial physiology.
Education:
- B.A. Physics (1st class), Oxford University (1974)
- B.A. Physiological Sciences (2nd class), Oxford University (1975)
- D.Phil. in Electrical properties of membranes, Oxford University (1979)
Research Interests: Attwell's work integrates cellular neurophysiology with systemic brain function. Key areas include:
- Neuroenergetics and synaptic energy budgets
- Cerebral blood flow regulation via pericytes and glial signaling
- Glutamate transport mechanisms in health and ischaemia
- Myelination and axonal health in the CNS
His research bridges molecular mechanisms with clinical relevance in stroke and neurodegenerative diseases.
Grants & Awards:
- European Research Council Advanced Investigator Award (€2.5M, 2010–2016)
- Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Award (£2.005M, 2013–2018)
- 2016 Fondation Ipsen Prize for Neuroenergetics
- 2001 Fellow of the Royal Society
Labs & Teams: Attwell's group at UCL investigates glial-neuronal interactions, with collaborations on neurovascular imaging and disease modeling. His work is supported by major grants focusing on brain energetics and myelin biology.
