David Andréen serves as a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at Lund University's Department of Architecture and Built Environment within the Faculty of Engineering (LTH). He directs the Architecture, Form, and Design subject area and coordinates the Master's programme in Digital Architecture and Emergent Futures. His academic profile spans both LTH's Circular Building Sector and LU's Nature-based Future Solutions profile areas.
Andréen's research focuses on nature-based solutions in architectural production, specifically how digital design and fabrication enable new approaches to complexity for sustainable construction. His work integrates biology, engineering, and architecture through research-by-design methodologies. Key research areas include biomimetic fabrication, robotic 3D printing, and circular building materials. His bioDigital Matter research group develops systems for sustainable construction using large-scale 3D printing with biomaterials and live fungi as binders.
His notable projects include Meristem Wall (self-organizing design processes for 3D printed envelopes), Protomycokion (biomaterial 3D printing with fungal binders), and collaborations with the Center for Construction Robotics. His work has been exhibited at the Venice Architecture Biennale and presented at Fabricate 2020. Research trends show increasing integration of biological systems with digital fabrication, emphasizing circular economy principles and UN Sustainable Development Goals.
