David A. Rahn is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Geography and Atmospheric Science at the University of Kansas. His research focuses on mesoscale meteorological phenomena, including coastal jet dynamics, boundary layer processes, and urban climate impacts. He employs observational techniques such as aircraft measurements, radiosondes, and lidar, alongside numerical simulations to study atmospheric interactions.
Key research areas include coastal wind reversals, upwelling systems off South America, and urban heat island mitigation strategies. Rahn leads the Precision Atmospheric Marine Boundary Layer Experiment (PreAMBLE) and has contributed to field campaigns like VOCALS-REx. He holds a NSF grant (AGS-1439515) for lidar and modeling applications from PreAMBLE datasets.
Rahn teaches courses in meteorology, synoptic forecasting, and atmospheric dynamics. His recent work explores environmental justice, linking urban pollution to pediatric asthma and analyzing land loss in the Mississippi Delta due to subsidence and sea-level rise.
