David A. Maurer is the Stewart W. Schneller Endowed Chair and Professor in the Department of Physics at Auburn University, serving since 2022 and 2017 respectively. He holds adjunct roles at Columbia University as Adjunct Associate Professor (2011–present) and Adjunct Assistant Professor (2005–2011). His research focuses on magnetically confined plasmas for fusion energy, particularly investigating 3D shaping effects on the Compact Toroidal Hybrid (CTH) device to suppress disruptive plasma events. He aims to expand collaborations with international institutions like the Wendelstein-7X experiment in Germany, exploring edge plasma physics and potential new experimental devices.
Education: Ph.D. (2000), M.Phil. (1998), M.S. (1993) from Columbia University; B.S. (1991) from University of Wisconsin.
Research interests include plasma stability, stellarator configurations, and fusion energy applications. His work addresses disruption suppression in tokamaks and explores magnetic field optimization for enhanced confinement. He plans diagnostic upgrades for CTH and seeks funding for a new device integrating tokamak and stellarator features.
Professional activities include membership in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Physical Society, and fusion-related organizations. Current projects involve collaborations on W7-X edge island divertor physics and design of advanced diagnostics for stellarator plasmas.
