Dave Kirk is Professor of Human-Centred Design and Director of Open Lab at Newcastle University, with over 20 years of research experience in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). His work integrates field research, prototyping, and speculative design to create value-sensitive interactive technologies and future worlds.
His research spans multiple application areas including:
- Video-Mediated Communication and Human-Building Interaction
- Memory, Memorialisation, and Cultural Heritage systems
- Human-Data Interaction and Digital Civics
- Digital Health, Wellbeing, and Human-Robot Interaction
- Slow Technology and Human-AI Interactions
His publication portfolio shows consistent focus on speculative design methods and ethical technology development. Recent works explore alternate history artifacts for research (2024), virtual funeral design fiction (2025), and feminist museum reimagination (2023), demonstrating evolving expertise in cultural computing and meaningful technology design.
Major projects include:
