Dave Abler

Dave Abler is a Professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology and Education at Pennsylvania State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences. His research focuses on international food and agricultural trade, trade policy, climate change adaptation, and environmental economics. He has held leadership roles, including serving as the head of the Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and Education (2024) and receiving teaching excellence recognition (2024). He is also an Affiliate Researcher with the IEE Research Themes in Climate and Natural Systems.

Abler’s work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability challenges, such as nitrogen loss mitigation in the Chesapeake Bay and fertilizer substitution practices in China. His research spans global case studies, including analyses of labor dynamics in Mexican children’s education (1984–2000) and economic efficiency in Costa Rican agricultural systems. He has contributed to policy discussions on water-quality trading programs and pollution control options in agricultural settings.

His recent publications highlight trends in meta-analysis methodologies for food demand elasticities and the socio-economic impacts of aging populations on labor-intensive farming.
