Daryl Maude is an Assistant Professor of Japanese and Undergraduate Faculty Advisor at the University of Colorado Boulder. He holds a PhD in Modern Japanese Literature and Critical Theory from UC Berkeley, along with degrees from the University of Leeds and University of London. His research explores marginalized voices in modern Japanese literature, focusing on queer communities, Okinawans, and sex workers. His work examines how these groups imagine futures amidst societal marginalization, particularly through the lens of Cold War and post-Cold War dynamics. He has published in journals like Qui Parle and Postmodern Culture, and contributed to edited volumes such as Literature in Heisei Japan, 1989-2019.
His research interests include Okinawan cultural production, affect theory, speculative fiction, and critical race studies. Prior roles include a postdoctoral position at Duke University and a MEXT scholarship-funded research stint at Waseda University. His office hours are Fridays 11am-12pm or by appointment.
