Darren R. Christensen is a Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Lethbridge and a Senior Research Fellow with the Alberta Gambling Research Institute.
Education:
- PhD in Psychology, University of Canterbury, New Zealand
Research Interests: Professor Christensen's research spans Addiction, Substance Use Disorders, and Gambling Disorders. He develops behavioral treatments and counseling for problem gambling, evaluates harm minimization policies, and investigates the neuropharmacological underpinnings of gambling using EEG and pharmacological challenges (opioid antagonists and agonists). His work uniquely integrates Mathematical Psychology and Quantitative Analysis to model choice behavior.

Advising and Grants: He supervises graduate students on topics including internet-delivered counseling, contingency management for gambling, and harm minimization policies. His research group has conducted studies such as the Buprenorphine Patch Study, Naltrexone-Imaging study, and Gambling Counselling Internet study, often funded by the Alberta Gambling Research Institute.
Labs and Teams: Professor Christensen leads the Gambling and Substance Use Studies research team at the University of Lethbridge, which focuses on behavioral and pharmacological interventions for gambling and substance use disorders.
