Darren Hick is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Furman University. He holds a PhD from the University of Maryland, College Park (2008), an M.Phil from the University of Wales, Lampeter (1999), and a B.A. from Trent University (1997). His research focuses on philosophical issues in copyright law, aesthetics, ethics, metaphysics, and popular culture. Notable areas include the ethics of artistic appropriation, the ontology of authored works, and the aesthetics of horror and comics.
Before academia, Hick worked as a textbook editor, comic-book critic, and graphic designer. His work often bridges legal, artistic, and cultural domains, addressing topics like forgery authenticity, canon formation, and the moral dimensions of creative borrowing. He has authored influential books such as Artistic License: The Philosophical Problems of Copyright & Appropriation (2017) and Introducing Aesthetics and the Philosophy of Art (2023).
Recent publications explore art ontology, cultural negotiation, and horror aesthetics. His articles critically analyze legal frameworks surrounding artistic works, the ethics of artistic creation, and the intersection of law with metaphysical concepts of art.
