Darin Miyashiro is a Lecturer in the Music Department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, specializing in Japanese koto ensembles. He teaches introductory and advanced koto classes, including MUS 127B, MUS 311C, and applied koto lessons. Born and raised in Hawai‘i, he holds BA degrees in Music and Asian Studies from the University of Redlands, with studies abroad at Waseda University in Tokyo. He trained under koto masters Kazue Sawai and Hikaru Sawai at the Sawai Koto Institute, and continues his studies in gagaku with the Hawai‘i Gagaku Society and Ryukyu soukyoku under Hideaki Miyazato. In 2015, he founded the Hawai‘i Koto Academy to promote traditional Japanese music.
