Dara Walker serves as Assistant Professor of African American Studies, History, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Pennsylvania State University, based in 326 Willard Building. Her interdisciplinary appointment bridges critical race studies, historical analysis, and gender scholarship within the university's academic structure.
Her educational trajectory includes a Bachelor of Science in African American Studies from Eastern Michigan University (2009) as a Ronald E. McNair Scholar, a Master of Arts in Pan-African Studies from Syracuse University (2011), and a doctoral degree in History from Rutgers University. These foundational experiences shaped her commitment to marginalized narratives in academic research.
Walker's research interrogates African American history through the lenses of Black youth activism, urban transformation, and educational resistance, with particular focus on Detroit's Motor City during the Black Power era. Her scholarship exposes how young people navigated systemic oppression through educational organizing, connecting gender politics with the Black radical tradition. This work challenges conventional historical narratives by centering youth agency in social movements.
Analysis of her publication record (2009-2025) reveals consistent engagement with Black student organizing, urban education under crisis conditions, and the intersection of music/culture with political consciousness. Her research demonstrates methodological innovation through public history frameworks and transnational perspectives on Black girlhood, while maintaining rigorous historical grounding in 20th-century U.S. urban contexts.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship
- Walter P. Reuther Library Albert Shanker Fellowship for Research in Education
- Ronald E. McNair Scholar designation
Research funding from the Ford Foundation, Walter P. Reuther Library, and Rutgers University has supported her archival work on Black educational activism. Though current advisees aren't publicly listed, her McNair Scholar background informs mentorship approaches for underrepresented students. She actively contributes to academic discourse through presentations at ASALH, AHA, SHCY, and NCBS conferences.
Walker currently develops her book manuscript High School Rebels: Black Power, Education, and Youth Politics in the Motor City, 1966–1972, examining student organizing's role in radical politics. Her public scholarship appears in The Black Scholar, Feminist Studies, and Black Perspectives, bridging academic and community knowledge production.
