معرفی
Dann Turner serves as a Senior Lecturer in Molecular Biology and Genomics at the University of the West of England, Bristol, within the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences. His research focuses on bacteriophage characterization against WHO priority pathogens, particularly Acinetobacter baumannii, and he holds influential roles as Vice Chair of the ICTV Bacterial Viruses Subcommittee and Chair of the Caudoviricetes Study Group since 2020.
His educational background includes a BSc from the University of Manchester, an MSc in Medical Microbiology from UWE Bristol, and a PhD. Prior to doctoral studies, he developed bacteriophage-based diagnostics as Technical Development Manager at Alaska Food Diagnostics (2005-2009).
Dr. Turner's research spans bacteriophage genomics, bioinformatics tool development, and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, with emphasis on viral taxonomy and molecular infection processes. His work integrates genomic analysis of temperate/virulent phages to combat critical-pathogen infections through novel classification frameworks.
Publication trends reveal concentrated expertise in genome-based phage taxonomy (47% of recent works), Acinetobacter-microbe interactions (33%), and bioinformatics standardization (20%), establishing him as a key contributor to virology and antimicrobial resistance research.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
He served as Associate Editor for Viruses (2018-2022) and joined the Innovate UK KTN Phage Innovation Network advisory board in 2023. Collaborations include Dr. J. Mark Sutton (Public Health England) and Dr. B. Evans (University of East Anglia), with teaching responsibilities in Bacteriophages, Genome Sequencing, and Molecular Microbiology.
Dr. Turner actively develops bioinformatics tools for viral classification and leads international taxonomy initiatives through the ICTV, driving reclassification of tailed bacteriophages using metagenomic data.
