Prof. Dr. Danijela Gregurec serves as Junior Professor for Sensory Sciences at FAU (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg) within the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy, where she leads the Biointerfaces Lab. Her research bridges sensory sciences, nanotechnology, and brain research with a focus on magnetic nanomaterials for neuromodulation applications.
Her research interests center on developing innovative approaches for wireless brain stimulation using magnetic nanomaterials. Her work explores how magnetomechanical neuromodulation can address neurological disorders like Parkinson's disease without requiring genetic modifications. She investigates the fundamental interactions between magnetic nanomaterials and neural tissue to create next-generation brain-computer interfaces.
Recent publications reveal a strong trend toward wireless, non-invasive neuromodulation techniques using magnetoelectric materials. Her research spans multiple disciplines including neuroscience, materials science, and biomedical engineering, with particular emphasis on developing biocompatible nanomaterials that can precisely target specific brain regions.
- European Innovation Council (EIC) funding for CROSSBRAIN project
- ERC BRAINMASTER project funding
Prof. Gregurec actively mentors PhD students including Franziska Wasner, Vicente María Durán Toro, and Uzair Ali, while leading several major EU-funded projects including CROSSBRAIN and BRAINSTORM. Her lab maintains strong collaborations with institutions worldwide including MIT, University of Glasgow, University of Turin, and CIC biomaGUNE in San Sebastián. The Biointerfaces Lab recently became a member of the FAU Profile Center New Materials and Processes (FAU NMP), expanding its research infrastructure and collaborative opportunities.
The Biointerfaces Lab, located in Room 00.042 at Henkestrasse 91 in Erlangen, comprises a multidisciplinary team including PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and technical staff. The lab actively participates in international research networks and regularly hosts visiting scientists from institutions across Europe and beyond. Recent group activities include participation in the International School of Physics 'Enrico Fermi' and organizing workshops on electromagnetic systems.
